  • The development of a comprehensive District Ophthalmology Service, including Primary Care and an associated Community Orthoptic Service, from a Single Consultant Service in 1983, to a Six Consultant Service in 2003.
  • The development of Ophthalmic Primary Care with no patients waiting longer than two weeks for an outpatient appointment.
  • Prime mover in Charter Mark Application:  Awarded to the Department of Ophthalmic Surgery, for excellence in the provision of public services – 1997 and re-awarded 2000 (Certificate signed by Prime Minister: Tony Blair).
  • Chairman of the Second Ophthalmic Theatre Project Group, to design and implement new ophthalmic theatres for the Department of Ophthalmic Surgery and the development of an Ambulatory Cataract Service, 2001.
  • The Provision of a specialised Corneal Clinic, including Corneal Transplant Surgery, since 1985.

  • Design and establishment of the Warrington Ophthalmic Microsurgical Teaching Centre - A ‘Wet-Lab’ teaching area for the practice and training of ophthalmic microsurgery on porcine eyes.  It has direct audio and video links with the ophthalmic theatre for surgical teaching.  This teaching area has been established under the auspices of the United Kingdom and Ireland Society for Cataract and Refractive Surgeons and is a recognised Regional Training Centre for the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons.  It has been established as a Regional Training facility since September 1996 and has was visited by the then President of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, who recognised it as a national training model.  The Centre has been used as a Regional Training Wet-Lab by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, for microsurgical skills training since 1999.  Establishing a programme of ‘Web-Lab’ training for all ophthalmic SpRs (Specialist Registrars) in Mersey Region and North West Region.
